The Articles of Confederation failed primarily due to the lack of a strong central government, which resulted in inefficiencies in governance and difficulties in enforcing laws. States retained significant power and acted independently, leading to economic instability and interstate disputes. Additionally, the federal government lacked the authority to levy taxes or regulate trade, crippling its ability to address national issues. These weaknesses ultimately highlighted the need for a more robust framework, leading to the Constitutional Convention of 1787.
