In 1298, there was a battle between Genoa and Venice. Polo was a captain for the Venetians and the Genoese captured him and put him in prison. After his release from prison in 1299, he returned to his home town of Venice and never traveled again, although he did paid for several other expeditions.

Marco Polo wasn't sponsored by any country. His father was a rich merchant from Venice, Italy and Marco, his father, and uncle paid their own way to China. His father had all ready been there once so when they arrived they were welcomed. Marco was 17 when he arrived with his father and stayed there many years.
I think that Marco Polo's account of his journey along the silk road puts paid to the idea that people did not travel its entire length.

They paid their own way. The Polo's (Marco and his uncles) were traders. They did not themselves see their travels as an 'expedition', but merely as business trips to trade, buy and barter with Middle East and Asian traders. Many historians now believe that Marco Polo never actually went to China himself (Chinese records nowhere mention him, while he claims to have been quite an important figure and confidant at the Court of the Khan) but that on his travels to today's Middle East he had listened closely to the many stories he heard from other traders - European and Asian - who had been there and bundled those stories as his own adventures.
