Why did the Nazis invade the Soviet Union?

Although initially Hitler wanted the USSR as an ally (or at least as a neutral), the Soviet takeover of German-occupied territory in Romania showed that Stalin had no intention of ceding European domination to Germany. Rather than wait for an eventual clash, Hitler and his advisors decided to preemptively seize control of the Soviet heartland, and then use its resources to fuel the German war machine.

A month before the official German-Soviet Border and Commercial Agreement (January 10, 1941), directives had been already issued for the swift takeover of the USSR. German troops launched Operation Barbarossa on June 22, 1941. Historians have observed that without the supplies received from the USSR from 1939 to 1941, Germany would likely not have had the resources to mount their invasion.

In hindsight it seems like a suicidal idea and history showed that it was. Hitler broke the cardinal rule of warfare: Do not underestimate your enemy. He expected the Soviet peasants to be no match for his armies. Expansionism drove him to seek, " living space" he called it, for the German people. He had no idea that the 'Invincible Reich' was about to get its first-ever hammering.

Hitler wanted to rule the world. Russia was just a portion of that goal.On June 22nd 1941 Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union at 0400 GMT. At 0500GMT the Propaganda minister of Germany Joseph Goebbels announced a statement from Hitler declaring that the mobilization of the German army would be the "greatest the world has ever seen".

In 1939 Germany and the USSR had signed a non-aggression pact which was obviously broken when the German army of around three million crossed the border and started to attack. It was codenamed "Operation Barbarossa".

The USSR had a very large force of around nine million men in arms and about half a million in reserve however they were at a great disadvantage when it came to skill and battle tactics.

Hitler also wanted the large oil reserves in Russia. Also without the Soviet Union, Germany would be the most powerful nation in Europe.

Hitler believed that the Blitzkrieg tactics would destroy Moscow and leave the Soviet Union in tatters. This failed as the tactic did not work on the large Russian plains.
There were many reasons that Hitler invaded Russia. Some of them are:

# He hit a dead end after failing to invade Great Britain. # He wanted control of the Russian oil fields. (This was to spend less money for his war efforts) # Hitler did not like Russia. The only reason he signed the non-aggression pact with them was to have help invading Poland. # Lastly, Hitler did not respect Russia. For one, the leaders had murdered millions of there own people. Plus in 1933, communism was Hitler's main competition for control over the government of Germany.

One thing he hated even more than Jews was the Communists. They were among the first groups persecuted and placed in camps as early as 1933 in Dachau.

Hitler and Stalin knew that one day they would be at war, it was inevitable. Nazi Germany and The Soviet Union just couldn't coexist.

He invaded for many reasons.When he invaded, Germany had almost complete control of Western Europe, it was not yet a two front war. The invasion of Great Britain (Operation Sealion) failed so he turned his sights elsewhere. At the same time, the Soviet Union front line was moved (because of the Non-Aggresion pact splitting up Poland). This left them wide open for an attack. With the military reasons for war established Hitler also has economic reasons to invade. In Hitlers book Mein Kemf, he stated that Eastern Europe would be a great place to expand his empire where more Germans could settle. Germany needed to feed its growing army and he sought ot use Ukrane as a large collective farm to feed his army. Hitler also saw the vast resources that were in the Ural Mountains which germany needed so as to be able to feed the German war machine (Tanks, Ammunition, Technology, Aircraft, etc..) Also the Caucus Mountains held great oil reserves which were a necessity to keep his mobile army at war. So there were plenty of economic reasons for war.

Finally he saw that war with the Soviet Union was imminent and that he would have the best opportunity to win when he invaded and he needed the resources to keep his army at war.

After agreeing to a non aggression pact treaty (made in secret) in early 1939 this allowed Hitler the time to allow him to draw up invasion plans (Operation Barbarossa) based upon the presumption that Communist and non Communist countries cannot coexist. Bear in mind that Hitler purged Communist party in the early thirties, together with the Jews. Also Hitler thought that inevitably the Soviets would invade so in his mind this was a preemptive strike. It was also common knowledge that the Soviet Officer core was decimated during the Stalinist purges during this time. This was enforced by the failed Finnish Campaign by the Soviets in their northern expansion of 1940, which finally resulted in a Soviet victory but at great cost. Hitler gained great confidence from this information that operation Barbarossa could success despite historical evidence to the contrary (Napoleonic Invasion of Russia in 1812)

The Nazis knew they would have to atack the soviet union to begin with, so they signed a non-fire treaty with the urss, and concentrate they efforts to invade ingland, still the long lines needed to suply theyr army were not helping them to this, so they decided to bombard ingland in order to weaken them, but having only theyr own oil to suply the needs of such an operation they need to find another source for this, also they need to prepared the resources needed for the incoming invasion and the closest pretrolifery fields were in South Asia, controled at the moment by the urss, so that's the mainly reason to open asecond front, and in my point of view your doom
