The Pilgrims celebrated Thanksgiving out of gratitude for their survival in the New World.
Specifically, the Atlantic crossing and the conditions in the future state of Massachusetts had been challenging. Indeed, the community had lost many members during their first year. Despite these challenges, they had survived. Additionally, they had high hopes for the coming years because of the successes of their crops.
