The Spanish colonized Texas for a number of reasons:
1. They wanted to expand their amount of land for trading and farming.
2. They wanted to convert the culture and religion of the Native Americans living there.
3. They wanted to get the land before the French or any other opposing threats could beat them to it. (Unfortunately for them, their efforts were for nothing.)

The Spanish built presidios, or military forts, to protect their missions from potential attacks by indigenous groups and rival colonial powers. These settlements typically included barracks for soldiers, storage facilities, and sometimes civilian homes, creating a fortified presence in the region. Additionally, pueblos, or towns, were established nearby to support the missions and provide a base for agricultural and economic activities. Together, these structures formed a network of defense around the missions, ensuring their survival and the spread of Spanish influence.
