Why did the armada take place?

There were several reasons.

As the King of Spain, Philip II's wish was to return England to the Catholic Faith and to restore Church lands and property that had been stolen by Henry VIII, and to reopen the Monasteries. The Pope agreed. Subject to the Pope's agreement Philip would choose a new Ruler pledged to restore the Catholic faith.

He also wanted to stop English support of the rebellion in the Spanish Netherlands, and to stop attacks on Spanish shipping by privateers and English captains such as Sir Francis Drake.

Queen Elizabeth I refused Philip's demands, so Philip gave orders for a huge fleet to be assembled, to carry out an invasion of England. They sailed in 1588 but were defeated by a smaller but faster British fleet.

At the time, Spain had control over the Spanish Netherlands (Holland & Belgium). Holland wanted independence from Spain because they resented being made Catholic, when most of the population were Protestant. During this time members of the Spanish Inquisition tortured and killed Protestants, and the English had been not-so-secretly helping the Dutch Protestants in Holland.

King Philip II of Spain became angered by this, as for a short time he had been married to Queen Elizabeth's half sister Mary. When they were married, England had been a Catholic nation.

King Philip thought that if he took control of the English Channel, his ships would have easy passage from Spain to the Spanish Netherlands, making it easier to quell any revolts.

Also at this time, English ships had been causing havoc with Philip's silver trade off the coast of the West Indies. The English were sinking Spanish ships carrying silver back to Spain, and worse, Francis Drake was capturing ships and taking their cargo of silver back to England. To Philip, Drake was nothing more than a pirate sanctioned by Queen Elizabeth.

The final straw for Philip was the execution of Mary Queen of Scots in 1587. Mary was not only a devout Catholic, but she had also made it clear that should she become Queen, Philip would inherit the throne after her death. Philip also believed that English Catholics were in danger. So he made the decision to attack and invade England.

The armada was the large fleet of ships (originally 150) intended to defeat the British fleet and carry troops from the Netherlands to England. However, when the armada failed miserably, it turned the tides of wealth and infrastructure in England, which also helped lead to the colonization of North America. Up to that point, the Americas were being dominated almost exclusively by the Spanish.
