Why did the colonist decide to separate from great Britain to create a new nation?

Because the British colonists were tired of Britain taxing them too much like the Stamp Act taxed their legal documents, and the Tea Act taxed the tea they brought.

Also they wanted to expand West into Native American territory and the British authorities would not let them do this because of the alliances Britain had with the Native tribes.

During the Colonial period the each colony had its on local government that had been in place for over a hundred years. The British Parliament began imposing harsh taxes on the colonies with out anyone to represent the colonies. So here is this government passing more and more Acts taxing the colonists and they had no say in the matter what so ever. The cry that came from the colonies was "No Taxation without Representation!" The colonists began to protest these taxes and in response to these protests the British Government sent armed British troops. One of these protests was the Boston tea party, in response to this the British government Passed a series of acts the colonists called The intolerable acts. The first of these acts closed the port of Boston, then they passed the quartering act, which housed british troops in private homes, The Administration of Justice act, which denied people to be tried by a jury of their piers and allowed them to be taken back to Brittan for trials, many of whom were never seen again, and The Massachusetts Government act dissolved the standing government of Massachusetts and placed it directly under the control of Parliament. Then there was the Boston massacre where armed British troops fired upon unarmed group of colonists and killed 5 of them. In general the colonists felt the the British Government was becoming more and more hostile towards them and unfairly taxing them, and generally abusing them so the revolted and formed a new Government.

They did it because the taxes were too high. I believe a tea tax was the straw which broke the camels back, people started dumping the crates of tea coming off of the ships into the river... and they've been paying high taxes and drinking coffee ever since.
