Dalmatians, people from the Croatian province of Dalmatia, originally came to New Zealand as gum diggers.
Dalmatians (later called Yugoslavs, now called Dalmatians again) emigrated to many places, including NZ, Australia and US. Like most emigrants, they wanted a better life, and freedom from persecution.

After this Illyricum was divided into Dalmatia and Pannonia.

In the early 1900's, 2,000 gallons of wine were coming out of 14 vineyards per year. By 1955, most of the 80 vineyards were run by Dalmatians. Dalmatians brought in new types of grapes, and made a higher quality wine. In 1926 the Government declared the limit to be 3,500 Dalmatians (that is still only wives, fiancées, and young children.)
