The Dutch and Swedes lost their North American colonies primarily due to military conflicts and competition from the English. The Dutch surrendered New Amsterdam to the English in 1664, who renamed it New York. Similarly, the Swedish colony of New Sweden, located along the Delaware River, was overtaken by the Dutch in 1655, and later fell under English control as well. Economic factors, including trade dominance and resource management, also contributed to their inability to maintain these colonies against stronger colonial powers.

Prior to becoming an American-British colony, the area that is now Delaware was settled by Swedes and Dutch immigrants. In 1682, it was ceded to the powerful British. Soon after it became one of the thirteen original American colonies.
