Up till September 1864, it looked as though Lincoln would lose the upcoming

General Election. In that event, there would probably have been a compromise peace. But Lincoln was saved by some timely battlefield victories, and after November, the Confederates had no realistic hope of winning.

For five more months, they hung on, just to show that they were not the sort of people to give up easily. You can call it heroic. Or you can call it irrresponsible.
