Upon unifying China, the Sui dynasty attempted to establish dominance over all its neighbors and declare itself as the region's superpower. It managed to subjugate Japan, Vietnam, Tibet, and Southern Korea but Goguryeo (the most powerful of the three kingdoms of Korea) refused to acknowledge the Sui Dynasty's supremacy. This caused the Sui to invade Goguryeo resulting in the Goguryeo-Sui war. Goguryeo managed to defeat the Sui dynasty and after two failed invasions, the Sui dynasty failed economically which resulted in resentment of the Chinese people and ultimately the downfall of the dynasty.

In essence, Goguryeo was the most significant factor contributing to the downfall of the Sui.
