The USA opposed communism, which Joseph Stalin was intent on spreading around Eastern Europe. After the Second World War and after Germany was defeated, there was strains between the Soviets and the Americans about what type of government should govern the post-Nazi Socialist Germany. This of course spread to other parts of Europe as well as the war in Korea, and what began the Cold War between the US and USSR (now Russia).
