Why didn't the US Civil War end in 1862?

The American Civil War finally ended due to the superiority of Union resources and strategy. First in the Western Theater, with the capture of Vicksburg and then Atlanta, then in the Eastern Theater, with the capture of Richmond and General Lee's Army of Northern Virginian, the Union "muscle" proved too much for the Confederacy. Another key factor was the naval blockade of Confederate ports, which contributed powerfully to the gradual weakening of Confederate strength.

When the US Civil War broke out in 1861, it was thought it would be over by Christmas. The North was far superior in manpower, manufacturing, railroads, etc. But the war was poorly managed by the Union. Their generals proved ineffective and strategies failed. That caused it to drag on for four long years. Optimists in the North believed that the casualties suffered by the Army of Northern Virginia, would prove to end Robert E. Lee's army. Lee was able to escape to Virginia, however, and the vaunted Army of Northern Virginia would survive to fight again. US President Lincoln blamed General George B. McClellan for not destroying Lee's army, however, Lincoln did not understand why that was impossible at that time. Not long after this, McClellan was relieved of his command of the Army of the Potomac. This was unfortunate in that it hampered McClellan's excellent plans he had for the remainder of 1862. His dismissal also was a blow to the military sense of pride. and morale. McClellan was very popular with his army. His replacement, Ambrose Burnside was reluctant to take command of the Army of the Potomac.
