Early on, communities came together to hire a teacher and house him/her, build the school, buy books and provide firewood during the winter. A lot of the value was in what people could contribute in kind or in time. Nowadays, we pay money toward a central fund to pay for this. It is just a change in currency.

Taxes are an easy way to gather money and provide for a common education for everyone in the community. This has always been an important feature in America--equal opportunity for all.

What taxes are paid for public schools?

Public schools are primarily funded through local property taxes, which are levied on residential and commercial properties within the school district. Additionally, state income taxes and sales taxes contribute to public school funding, varying by state. Federal funding also plays a role, though it typically constitutes a smaller portion of a school's budget. These taxes collectively support operational costs, teacher salaries, and educational programs.
