Hannibal took the route through the mountains to attack Rome from the last place they expected to be attacked from. When Rome heard that Hannibal was coming through the mountains, they sent an extremely large force to meet him. When the Romans moved up into the mountains, Hannibal surrounded and defeated them. Though he lost the manpower needed to sack the city, he would not be defeated until Scipio Africanus met him in battle in Carthage.
In 1492, Christopher Columbus was sailing for Spain, seeking a westward route to Asia in hopes of finding a faster way to access valuable spices and trade goods. He believed that by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean, he could reach the Indies. Instead, he inadvertently discovered the Americas, landing in the Bahamas and opening the door to European exploration and colonization of the New World.
Gaul is France. The mountains between France and Spain are the Pyrenees. However I thought Hannibal was supposed to have taken the elephants across the Alps.
Columbus chose to sail west instead of east because he believed he could reach Asia by sailing across the Atlantic Ocean, which he thought would be a faster and more direct route than traveling eastward around Africa.

The Coriolis effect causes global winds to appear to turn instead of blowing straight across the Earth's surface. This effect is the result of the Earth's rotation and causes moving air or water to be deflected to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere.
