The rules for taking the flag down at night for a civilian are different than for the military. A civilian must take down a flag before dark if there is no light shining on the flag pole. The flag can be folded but it must never touch the ground. Many people choose to roll their flags to prevent creases.

American flag
According to the US Flag Code, the US Flag should be larger in size and (if flying on the same pole), at the top of the pole. If flying the American flag with a state flag, the American flag needs to be on a taller pole than the state flag and displayed on the flag's right side. If flying them on poles of equal size, then flying the American flag on the flag's right side is correct.
Have lights shining up at it
the reason why we have to light the American flag is because people who comes from another country has to know what flag we represent and also because our flags mean different things and we need to respect our flag at all times.

Yes, you can fly the American flag at night without light, but it is generally recommended to have it properly illuminated if displayed after dark. According to the U.S. Flag Code, the flag should be displayed only from sunrise to sunset unless it is illuminated. Therefore, while it's permissible to fly it at night without light, it is not in accordance with the spirit of the Flag Code.

It is not against the law, no. But if the flag is flying at night, it is considered poor form/disrespectful if it does not have a light trained on it.
You're supposed to take your American flag down at dusk and put it back up at dawn. If you are unable to take your American flag down, you need to illuminate it either with lighting on the ground shining up or you can now get solar-powered lights you can attach to a flagpole to light it when the sun goes down. I know of one website that sells them called Flag Expressions. They have solar ones too.

If a flag is to be flown at night it must be illuminated. Light that projects upward from below the flag contributes to the increasing problem of light pollution. Downward lighting of the flag is the preferred method of flag illumination. Several companies offer down lighting for flag poles.

You cant let the flag touch the ground or that is disrespect of the United States Of America......Never cut or rip the flag....... Always keep the flag in the light, if it is outside in the dark at night that means that our country has fallen........All the other flags have to be lower than the American Flag
