The Declaration of Independence cites most of the grievances the Colonists had with the British governmnen (see the related link) ,as well as justifies their right to declare independence. Basicially there were treated as second-rate citizens, paying taxes that they did not have a say in setting and receiving little in government services. Their protests and questions were largely ignored until they they became a threat to the government . Then the British sent a army over to maintain order. The army was quartered in private homes without begin invited and civil rights were suspended.
