Why has Russia chosen to invade Georgia 10 years after a cease-fire was agreed?

Well, Georgia has decided to retake its lost region of Southern Odissa that unofficially seceded from Georgia in the 1990s. Souther Odissa is on the border of Russia and they fear that military operations that close to Russia is problematic to their security. It would be like if San Diego seceded from the US and we sent troops to retake it and Mexico invaded San Diego to protect themselves.

Russia invaded Georgia in order to protect the interests of South Ossetia. The Georgian military had attacked South Ossetia because it claimed that Georgian towns had been fired upon and was responding to those attacks. Russia has strong ties to South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Russia is not willing that these regions should lose their ability to govern themselves without interference from Georgia. Georgia, on the other hand does not want to be subject to attacks from the South Ossetians. Georgia itself was once a part of the Soviet Union but won its independence from it in April of 1991.

Russia has pursued a consistent aggressive foreign policy to weaken the former Soviet states by supporting separatist movements in those states. It has supported Abkhaz and South Ossetian separatists against the Georgian government, Armanians of Nagorno-Karabakh against the Azeri government, Transdniestrians against the Moldovan government. and Crimean Irridentists against the Ukrainian government. Russia believes that by weakening the former Soviet countries, it can retain them, and certainly the separatist regions in their sphere of influence.
