The antebellum years saw the USA with a strong economy. Agriculture and manufacturing in the North and an agricultural economy in the South. Each sector helped each other and each sector helped the US's balance of trade. Under normal conditions, there was no need for the South to lessen its dependence on farming.

The North and the South grew apart, because they had very different opinions on slavery and if they should have it or not. They also grew apart when the Civil war took place. Why? They had different perspectives on almost EVERYTHING!
