America was named after Amerigo Vespucci a florentine sailor on a ship that explored the west Indies or the Carribean today. The story goes that when he returned to Italy he told monks about a vast continent he helped discover so when the monks were drawing the map they named it America( this is because all continents are named demal in Latin). Its one of those weird things that happen with naming places
