Sebastian Vizcaino was the first to make a detailed map of the California coastline and consequently was responsible for naming various sites such as the bays of San Diego and Monterey, and Santa Catalina Island, among others. Vizcaino's journey began in 1602 and as an unforeseen consequence led to the exploration of the Oregon coast when one of his ships became separated from the group.

Notes: San Diego was the name of Vizcaino's flagship while mapping the coast.

The Count of Monterrey was the Spanish Viceroy who assigned him to map the coastline.
