Thomas Paine was a writer who wrote in favor of republicanism (the idea that people should live in a republic, rather than a monarchy), and American independence from Britain. His most famous work was titled Common Sense, which was incredibly effective at garnering support for the Colonists' cause. Unlike other writers and philosophers of his time, he had a tendency to write in a way that was very easy for anyone to understand, and he was even funny at times. People would go to inns and taverns and read Common Sense out loud for all to enjoy (because not everyone could read), further spreading the Revolutionary cause.

However, he was also quite radical. After the war ended and the United States was formed, he went on to support the French Revolution, even after the Reign of Terror began, and he wrote a book called The Age of Reason, attacking organized religion (especially Christianity) and the Bible. He also began writing against Founding Fathers, especially George Washington, which made him even more unpopular. He did remain a source of inspiration for later radical groups like socialists, anarchists and feminists.
