The English admiral Nelson
Captain Thomas Masterman Hardy. NOT Admiral Horatio Nelson - he was the Admiral of the Fleet, and was on board (and died on) HMS Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar. But Hardy was the Captain in direct command of HMS Victory.
The late hero of South Africa was Nelson Mandela. His protests and his movement to abolish Apartheid in his nation resulted in a 27 year prison term as punishment. Later he became the leader there. He only recently died at the age of 95.
The main reason is that he commanded the British fleet at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 and inflicted a devastating defeat on the combined French and Spanish fleets. This established Britain as the undisputed leading naval power, a position that wasn't seriously challenged till just after 1900. Please never confuse this Nelson with Nelson Mandela.
No, Lord Nelson was not a pirate. He was a British naval commander known for his leadership during the Napoleonic Wars, particularly at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Unlike pirates, who engaged in illegal acts of robbery at sea, Nelson served under the Royal Navy and fought for his country's interests. His legacy is that of a national hero rather than a pirate.
