Tanks are huge killing machines. They had not been seen/used before WW1 and were both deadly and psychologically terrifying.
Tanks were meant to break the stalemate of trench warfare

Breaking a stalemate in warfare was difficult because the technology that made this type of war impossible had yet to be invented. Eventually, the U.S. and Britain developed things like planes and tanks that made fighting war in the trenches suicidal.
in my opinion, what really broke the stalemate was when the US joined. fresh new troops for the Allies gave them an advantage over the tired Central Powers.
Tanks allowed the Allies to cross no-man's land safely and to punch holes inside German lines, leaping trenches while bullets pinged off their hulls. Once the tanks hand broken through, the infantry could safely cross no-man's land and consolidate the tanks gains, without being mowed down by a hail of bullets from enemy trenches.
They did help break the stalemate.
Something was needed to break the stalemate (to breach the defenses); tanks could do that.
The Tanks That Broke the Ranks Out in Picardy was created in 1916.
