Alexander Hamilton was always looking for ways to be 'useful' to the nation and a year earlier had gotten married to Elizabeth (December 14, 1780). He needed to provide for his wife and soon-to-be eight children. After being a hero at the Battle of Yorktown (October 1781), he started studying law with his usual intense focus and immersion, such that Hamilton passed the bar in record time by July 1782.
Most people do not know this, but when John Jay resigned from being the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, President Washington asked Hamilton to be the Chief Justice!
