James Monroe was the fifth President of the United States. He also created the Monroe Doctrine which was US's opposition to European colonization.

In the Monroe Doctrine, he warned that European efforts to reestablish colonies would be considered "dangerous to our peace and safety." This is because some European monarchies planned to help other countries, who have fought for their independence, such as Spain and Portugal, regain their colonies. US leaders feared that if this happened, their own government would be in danger. He also promised that the US would stay out of European affairs.
