This was the first major win for his men and he needed it. After the signing of the Declaration the king sent thousands of troops. One observer wrote that there were " so many ships it looked like the whole of London was on them." Washington was outnumbered and used tricks to save his men. When the British were ready to fight in Brooklyn NY they had 3 times the number of men. Washington managed in one night to move 10,000 men, arms, and cannon away from the British army. Trenton was an important win for him. They took 900 POW's that night and the win improved morale of his men.
