The realistic novel was already around in the United States in the 1800s (Mark Twain was writing around and just after the Civil War, for example). But evils perpetuated by slavery, and the decimation of half the country, and the personal issues of families divided by war, left a huge scar on America.
Literary critics and historians believe that the book, The Red Badge of Courage, depicted the Battle of Chancellorsville in 1863. The novel was published in 1894 when Crane was only 24 years old.

I recall being taught that the oldest English novel is called 'Piers Plowman', written by William Langland in the early 1300's. I'm sure that there are other works that could arguably be called the first.
Many novels have been written about the Civil War, and many have been praised in whole and in part. Nonetheless, the popularity of Margaret Mitchell's "Gone with the Wind", in itself and in the film production based on it, has been so great for so long that it is frequently considered to be the best Civil War novel ever written.
