∙ 12y agoD-day was originally a military term to specify the day that combat was to be initiated. While June 6, 1944 is the best known D-day, the term was used frequently in military parlance before and after to describe the day the military began the fight, and it is still used frequently today.

The Allies needed to both: A. Take back France, and B. Find a route of invasion into Nazi-occupied Europe. The northern coast of France, named Normandy, was the perfect spot. Thus, the D-Day invasion will take place here.

My father was in the 149th combat engineer battalion. They landed on DDay on Omaha Beach. Their boat hit a mine coming in and several men were injured or killed. My father was injured, but able to go on.
