D-day was originally a military term to specify the day that combat was to be initiated. While June 6, 1944 is the best known D-day, the term was used frequently in military parlance before and after to describe the day the military began the fight, and it is still used frequently today.

Why did D-Day take place? Simple.

The Allies needed to both: A. Take back France, and B. Find a route of invasion into Nazi-occupied Europe. The northern coast of France, named Normandy, was the perfect spot. Thus, the D-Day invasion will take place here.
