It is not known for certain that it was made in Kent but it is thought that the embroidery was commissioned by Bishop Odo of Bayeux, Williams half-brother, who was made Earl of Kent in 1067 and would have access to skilled workers.
Anglo-Saxon embroidery was famous across Europe at this time and the vegetable dyes used were the same as in other embroideries from this area.
