Americans were initially reluctant to join World War II due to a strong isolationist sentiment, shaped by the trauma of World War I and the desire to focus on domestic issues during the Great Depression. It was not until the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941 that public opinion shifted dramatically in favor of entering the war.
