there was a stalemate because the no one was used to trench warfare and new weapons and techniques were better for defending than attacking. also neither side's artillery or infantry could breach the enemy's front line to let the cavalry.
also during the war, many soldiers staued defending instead of attakcng, also 1/3 of artilary were duds, meanng they didn't explode let alone hit the enemy. by Jables
