Why were canals important to the development of transportation in the US?

For example, i a wagon was Immigration north, then the wagon cam accross a path of land that is rough, clustered, and has plants growing that are blocking the path from the wagon, then this would make the travel to their destination very difficult and hard but if the land was flat and empty then it would be no problem

They were important in the movement of large loads of raw materials and finished products that were incapable to be carried or hauled by horses. These man-made rivers were built deep enough to endure the capacity loads of barges.

Canals and railroads both brought superior transportation to the areas in which they were built. They could both carry heavy freight at much lower cost than could the horse-drawn wagons they competed with. They were also less subject to weather conditions than were roads and goods could be hauled more safely at night on a railroad or canal. Railroads were faster with heavier loads than wagons. Canal boats were not fast but could carry really large and heavy loads compared to a wagon.
