The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition, defines Genocide as "The systematic and planned extermination of an entire national, racial, political, or ethnic group." The key word here is entire.
The Horror (isn't there some better word?) of the Holocaust cannot really be grasped, especially by those of us who did not live it. It's nearly impossible to wrap one's mind around it. Six million Jews, their children included, because and only because they were Jews. The Nazis incidentally also murdered another five or six million other people, including children. Was there a reason? The Nazis apparently thought so. But the main horror, the most revolting, disgusting thing that sticks with all of us more than any other, is the children. How could they do that? To children? It seems the most psychopathic thing about the whole psychopathic episode.
But it can be explained. It can be explained in the context of a "systematic and planned extermination."
One of the best examples I have ever heard comes from my own country, the United States: Just before the Bear River massacre of a Shoshone (Indian) camp of 400 people on January 29, 1863, California militia leader Patrick Edward Connor was infamously quoted as saying, "Take no prisoners and remember nits grow into lice." Connor's men then proceeded to wipe out a winter camp of men, women and children, especially children. "… nits grow into lice." When you have that attitude, and you can somehow dehumanize other human beings in your own mind, it is, apparently, possible to justify to yourself the deliberate murder of, yes, even children. And that, dear reader, is why children were put into gas chambers.
(A footnote: Anne Frank was not shot nor did she die in a gas chamber. She died of typhus in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. But she was just as dead, and for the same non-reason, as every other child who perished in the Holocaust.)
