The economy of Europe was agricultural through the entire Middle Ages. The nobility controlled most of the land, and so they controlled most of the means of production of the economy.

The peasants, most of whom lived on the land the nobles controlled, paid rent and provided services in exchange for their places to live and fields to work. So the nobles derived their wealth indirectly from farming.
