Rivers and railroads were very important in the US Civil War for transporting troops, equipment, and supplies. The two sides would fight over the right to use said transportation.And the trains they could sleep on.

The river valleys were easy to travel along, provided a source of water necessary for the troops and could be used to trasnport the troops and supplies on the waterways for long distances quickly and cheaply. Rivers, being difficult to cross, serve as a natural funnel forcing the armies to go in certain directions.
