The main danger of being in trenches in world war one was that you could get bombed or even have mustard gas come in. The troops were effectively living in holes in the ground (no sanitation facilities whatsoever) which it is said could be smelt from miles of, were full of vermin (rats, mice, fleas etc) and decaying corpses. The trenches frequently flooded and especially on the British French side on the western front as they had the lower ground. machine gun fire frequently came from either side and until later on in the war soldiers didn't even have helmets for protection simply fabric hats. When the first gas attacks started there wasn't any gas masks available and soldiers were advised to urinate on handkerchiefs and place them over there mouths. Both trenches were repeatedly bombarded with heavy shells. To top it all of the men were expected to charge over the top into no mans land and a rain of heavy machine gun fire generally to be shot to bits or caught on the barbed wire, any deserters would of course be shot.

Also there were millions of rats which could actually eat them alive. Lice was another danger because it gradually sucked all their blood little by little. And finally, life in the trenches was dangerous because of the weather. The weather was very cold therefore soldiers could easily get pneumonia or any lung disease. The cold, rainy weather also filled their trenches with water. The soldiers had to stand underwater for almost the whole day, this caused Trench Foot, which was an awful disease which made their feet rot.

Some of the dangers soldiers faced in the trenches were gunfires everywhere, the shrapnel shells that the Germans send over, no-mans land, you had to do your job otherwise you'd get shot, the tanks, gas that blinds you and you could drown in the mud in the trenches if you walked off the duck boards.
