The Fourth Crusade, and the final large effort of the crusades period, was launched against the city of Constantinople, capital of the Bysantine Empire by the Western European alliance of Christian states. In 1204, 33,500 Crusaers marched against the center of Orthodox Christianity in the East. This number is divided into 4,500 knights with horses, 9,000 squires and 20,000 foot soldiers.
