In Greek culture, the tradition was to sprinkle dust on the deceased and place a coin under their tongue for passage on the river Styx to get to the underworld. It was considered complete disrespect to the Gods if a family did not do this and the deceased's soul would not be allowed into the underworld and be left to wander around for all eternity.
