they were much less efficiant considering all the newer technologies we have accumulated over the centuries. things like the heavier plows increased the amount of crops people could grow, the windmill and water mills made grinding up wheat easier because you are using Natural Resources to do the work and you don't need so many workers, so then they can go start their own lives in some other place.
