The early middle ages were very chaotic, and the members of the nobility had to be able to handle local situations themselves, without waiting for an army from a central government. This meant that the nobility had to have its own armies, separate from the king's, and lead to their being very powerful.

Naturally, they did not want to give up that power, and sought every way they could to extend it. The result was a long power struggle between the nobility and the monarchs. The nobles built castles without licence, for example, and the monarchs tore them down. The nobles aligned themselves in opposition to the king, and the king aligned himself with other nobles opposed to the first group.

The thing everyone wanted, of course, was power and wealth. Eventually, when things calmed down a bit, the middle class arose, and made themselves wealthy and powerful by producing things, transporting things, selling things, and financing things.
