Unless the person confessed or there was a witness to a crime finding a person guilty was very hard. Many crimes were also not recognized as a crime, but an accident. Murder was one of these that was often mistaken as an accident. Some people were also accused of crimes that were innocent and were found guilty of committing the crime they were accused of. Superstition ruled the world, so if a person was a little different, had a disability, or in someway not seen as "normal" they were often accused as having caused a suspected death or event.

One way to solve if the person was really guilty is called Ordeal by Water. What they would do is chain them to an iron ball and throw the victim into the sea. If the float, that meant he/she was guilty of the crime and if they sink it meant that he/she was innocent and would be saved.

Another is called Ordeal by Fire. They would boil an iron ball and give it to the victim. The victim would be bandaged and if 3 days later the blister is as big as a walnut it meant the victim was guilty.

What is the difference between the Renaissance and middle ages?

the difference between the renaissance and the middle ages is that the middle ages was a time of survival and religious belives. During the middle ages people still believed in god. Also, there were many raids, and travel was not safe. People focused on getting enough food and survivng in the harsh way of life. The middle ages is known as the dark ages because of how harsh people lived. On the other hand the renaissance was of time of rebith, invention, and bring back the classic ways of the Greek and Roman ideas. People lived in luxury and enjoyed life unlike the people of the medival era, otherwise known as the middle ages.

What was the era before the dark ages?

The Renaissance time period came after the Dark Ages. ----- It seems most people who use the term Dark Ages are talking about the Early Middle Ages, which is a period from about 450 AD to 1000 AD. They call the following period the Middle Ages. Some people would have the Dark Ages coincide with the Age of Migration, from about 300 to 700, and this would mean it was followed by the second half of the Early Middle Ages, which began with a time called the Carolingian Renaissance. Other people would have the Dark Ages be equal to the entire Middle Ages, so it would be followed by the European Renaissance. I think most historians do not use the term Dark Ages.
