Cold War politics between, in the media oversimplification, Khrushchev on the Soviet Side and Kennedy on the US and Western side ( Ich Bin ein Berliner- I am a Berliner!) went the slogan. the crisis ultimately culminated in the erection and fortification of the now-defunct Berlin Wall. While Berlin was a divided city since the end of War II (and there were separate US, British, French, and Soviet sectors, the infamous wall was not actually erected until after l96l. Berlin Wall.
