There were several major developments in medieval music.

One was a means for writing music down. This did not happen as a single breakthrough, but in distinct steps. The first step was a system for showing the direction and magnitude of changes in pitch. The second was a staff, which showed pitch more clearly. And the third was a method for recording the duration of notes.

Another development was the introduction of polyphony, and subsequently of counterpoint.

Musical Instruments were introduced, and perhaps the most significant single development was the introduction of the bow, for playing fiddles. (The earlier instrument called the musical bow was not the same thing, and was, in fact, a sort of Zither with a single string.

There were a large number of other developments, including invention, introduction, and establishment of many musical instruments, changes of style, and so on.
