While the Greek Hippocrates is considered the father modern medicine, medicine its self has been around since the earliest shamen.

Romaen did not practice what we think of as modern medicine. Bloodletting and purging (bleeding into a bowel and thowing up) were considered normal. Medicines might contain lead, animal testicles or urine. Herbs compounded in wine was popular. Some of the treatments worked, many didn't. Yes, you had to be basically healthy and lucky to be sick
