For most children growing up in Medieval England the first year of life was one of the most dangerous, with as many as 50 percent of children succumbing to fatal illness. During this year the child was cared for and nursed, either by parents (if the family belonged to the peasant class) or (perhaps) by a wet nurse if the child belonged to a noble class.
Childhood was very short in this time. People were born and then about 7-8 years old they were expected to be like adults. They were dressed as adults and many had jobs. There wasn't any "teens" (this term doesn't happen in until 1940), and if aperson lived to his/her 20's they were lucky. Many children were abused, sold, and killed. If they had a disability they were usually killed. Wealthy children were used as tools for parents to gain more power and land. A little girl could be expected to have her parents make a marriage contract as young as 2-3 years old. By the time she was 7-8 she was living with his family learning the family ways and most likely she would have her first baby at 12-13. Usually the husband was 20 or 30 years older. Life was hard and short.
Children did not get much time to grow up. Peasant children were usually working at age six. Children who were intended for trades, crafts, the Church, or knighthood usually started apprenticing or going to school at age seven or so, and that was what they did for about the next fourteen years.
Children were very exposed to medical problems, especially childhood diseases, so something like half of them died before they were five. At some times, the life expectancy at birth was not much over twenty because of this, but if you could get to age five, then you were quite likely to live past into your fifties or longer.
