He had been proclaimed emperor by the imperial guard which had murdered his predecessor, Caligula. Moreover, Gaul rebels often took refuge in Britain. Officially the troops were sent to restore Verica the king of the Atrebates, who had been deposed and exiled. There as a conflict in southern England. The Catuvellauni were expanding at the expense of the Trinovantes and the Atrebates. The general Aulus Plautius won two battles in the southeast which were sufficient for victory. The Roman army was superior and the Romans effectively fought only against the dominnat people of the area, the Catuvellauni. Elven British tribes surrendered. The general Vespasian was sent to conquer the southeast of England. The North of England was conquered later (in 78-79) by the general Agricola.
