No-one knows. Most people connect them with prairie Indians, but wigwam-like structures are much older in places like Mongolia. They probably also were used as temporary shelters by prehistoric peoples elsewhere thousands of years ago. But since they are structures of wood and animal skins that perish over time, no trace that we can date is left of their existence .
