Where did the energy in coal originate?

Not sure if this will answer your question, but I'll give it a shot. It's less about the fact that is is coal and more about the fact that coal gives off heat. When coal was first being used as a heat source, it was cheaper than wood and there was a lot of it. So really the origin of the energy is in the heat that the coal generates when on fire and less about the coal itself.

Why did people begin to use more coal during the Victorian era?

Because it was cold.

How many years has their been famine?

Famine has been a recurring phenomenon throughout human history, with documented instances dating back thousands of years. Notable famines occurred in ancient civilizations, and significant ones have been recorded in more modern times, such as the Irish Potato Famine in the 19th century and the Great Chinese Famine in the 20th century. While it's difficult to quantify the exact number of years famine has occurred globally, it is clear that it has affected many regions and populations intermittently over centuries.

How has technology affected the mining or use of coal throughout history?

Technological success has changed the life of everyone in the world and it has also changed the way coal mining companies explore and market coal. High-tech and safe exploitation and usage of coal is the demand of the 21st century. In order to correspond to these new requirements the effective organizing management of human resources must take place. In other words, the technologies have made a coal mining industry a high-technological affair that is equipped with computers and all the necessary machinery Nowadays thousands of men and women in the world are working in 2,560 mines in 26 countries to supply billions tons of coal. Till the 1950th coal mining companies applied two methods of exploration - surface mining techniques or underground ones. Surface mining techniques are popular and are widely used in the USA mines since 1970s. This method is useful when coal deposits lie near the surface and can be easily extracted. Another method - an underground one - is used when coal deposits lie deep under the surface. In this situation continuous mining machines are used in the "room-and-pillar" method. In the 1950s, a new underground mining method appeared in Europe. It is called a 'longwall mining' method that applies laser technology. Today, it is widely used by coal mining companies in the world. From this moment the coal exploration, extraction and delivery to the market have become secure, effective, clean and not harmful for the environment. Nowadays the use of computers, lasers, satellites and other technologies has become a usual thing in coal mining industry and many coal mining organizations, such as Globaltex Industries Inc, apply all these advances in their business. From now on the coal mining extraction has become absolutely safe for people thanks to high-tech technologies and effective human resources management work. The high-tech mining technology is of great importance in enlarging the competitive forces of the coal mining industry. The state and private coal mining corporations make great efforts in order to put into action high-tech technologies, so that up-to-date equipment. The coal mining industry is becoming more and more mechanized.

Why has the cost of coal risen?

There are two reasons for the cost of coal to rise. First, inflation causes the cost of everything to rise. Secondly, in mining, you extract the easiest deposits first, and as they are exhausted, you mine the more difficult deposits, which cost more to extract. People have mined coal for thousands of years, and we are gradually going deeper and deeper.

What is the different between firewood and coal?

Firewood is wood that has been cut and is used as a fuel for heating or cooking. Coal, on the other hand, is a fossil fuel that is mined and used for generating electricity, heating, and industrial processes. Coal burns hotter and longer than firewood, but tends to produce more pollution.

Why is coal less readily available for sale than it used to be?

Even though there is still an abundance of coal, over the years the surface coal has depleted so more of the coal is now mined from underground, which is a much slower and expensive process. Another factor are the transport costs, the cheapest way to transport the coal is by river barges, but they cannot go everywhere they need to, so the coal tends to get used near to the mines. Probably the biggest factor is the rising population, greater demand and increased use of electricity compared to 30 years ago. Over 90% of all the coal mined goes directly to the power plants to generate electricity, and the remainder goes for industry such as steel, paper and concrete.

Is bituminous coal a hard coal or a soft coal?

Bituminous Coal exists in the geological area known as The Pittsburgh Coal Seam-- an area extending from Western Pennsylvania, Western West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. Though mined since the days of Native American Indians, and heavily mined since 1800, it is estimated there is still enough coal in this large seam to last millions of years. Bituminous coal is a soft coaland was well-suited to burning in factories and homes, and thus, held more demand and higher price.

Is burning coal to create steam in power plants the use of nonrenewable energy source?

Depends on where it came from. If this is mined coal( which it usually is) it's nonrenewable. If it is coal made from dead wood, this is renewable. We can always grow more trees.

Why coke is not used as fuel?

The term means a product similar to coal and mined the same way. Some is made by using coking oven from coal. Coal is cheaper and that is why it is used more often. Coke is cleaner and other methods should be looked into before coal and oil run out.

Is Bituminous coal more valuable than Anthracite?

The value of Bituminous coal and Anthracite can vary based on factors such as market demand, purity, and usage. Anthracite is typically considered higher in quality and heat output, making it more valuable for certain applications. However, Bituminous coal is also valuable for its versatility and widespread use in industries like steel production. Ultimately, the value of each type of coal will depend on specific market conditions and requirements.
