The architecture of the Renaissance (as well as the sculpture) was modelled on Roman architecture. The term renaissance means rebirth and refers to the rebirth of interests in the classics (the Romans and the Greeks) which started in Italy in the 14th century and then spread around Europe. The use of Roman models for architecture was further stimulated by the rediscovery of a textbook of Roman architecture by an ancient Roman architect, Vitruvius.

The Roman domes have influenced western architecture. They were the inspiration for building churches and public buildings with domes from the Italian Renaissance onwards. Notable churches with domes are the Cathedral of Florence, St Peter's Basilica at the Vatican and St Paul's in London. The Pantheon in Paris, which was originally a church and then became a mausoleum for the remains of notable French citizens has a dome. The United States Capitol, atop Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. has a dome, too.
The arch and the vault The Romans did not invent but did master both the arch and vault, bringing a new dimension to their buildings that the Greeks did not have. Domes Concrete As well as mastering and refining Ancient Greek geometrical learning, the Romans had their own wonder material. Concrete freed the Romans from building only with carved stone or wood.
The main Greek influence has come through the way it influenced Roman architecture. Much of Renaissance architecture was influenced by Roman architecture. Brunelleschi, the great early Renaissance architect went to Rome to study Roman buildings. A big influence was the discovery of De Architecta, a text book on (Roman) architecture by Vitruvius, a Roman architect and engineer. Palladium was the father of the Palladian style which became very popular in Britain, which was based on the roman mansion. The neo-classical style was based on gthe Graeco-roman style. The dome was a great Roman achievement The Pantheon and the Hagia Sophia have been regarded as yardsticks for later domes.

The architectural developments used in the pantheon were the use of the dome, (a perfect sphere) lighter concrete mixtures in the dome, and the use of coffers, or sunken panels in the dome to reduce the weight.
The dome of Pantheon in Rome is made of roman concrete and it is still the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the word. It is the best-preserved of all Ancient Roman building in the city of Rome because it was tuned into a Christian church and thus it was maintained properly and was not ransacked for building materials. These days it is mainly as a tourist attraction.

You might be thinking of the Pantheon, however the Pantheon was more hemispherical and would not have worked on the scale of Brunelleschi's dome so he had to use newer Gothic methods.
